David Moyes paid a warm tribute to “wonderful man” Bill Kenwright following the death of his former chairman at Everton promo

Everton announced on Tuesday that Kenwright had died aged 78 following a battle with cancer promo

Moyes and Kenwright formed a close bond during the Scot’s 11-year spell as manager at Goodison Park promo between 2002 and 2013 promo

”On Wednesday morning current manager Sean Dyche and club captain Seamus Coleman laid flowers at the statue of Dixie Dean outside Goodison Park, where the Everton squad were holding a training session promo

All players and staff observed a minute’s silence before the session and Kenwright’s image was shown on the stadium’s screens promo

In a statement on the club website, Dyche said: “It’s a very sad time for everyone at Everton promo Football Club to lose our chairman, someone who has been such an amazing servant to the club in so many ways promo

“His influence in bringing me to Everton in the first place was important and I have nothing but gratitude and respect for his unwavering support of myself, the staff and our players promo

“It was a pleasure to share the moment of reaching our objective last season with him – a moment I know he felt so strongly about after such an arduous season, on and off the pitch…“He was an incredible professional, in terms of what he did with Everton and also what he achieved in the theatre industry promo

Spending time with him and learning about his family, you couldn’t help but be taken by his passion promo

”Dyche was told of the news midway through Tuesday’s training and called an immediate halt to the session as players and staff paid their respects promo

Kenwright, who succeeded Sir Phillip Carter as chairman in 2004 after first joining the board at Goodison Park in 1989, had a cancerous tumour removed from his liver in August promo

Liverpool-born Kenwright was a successful theatre and film producer when asked to join the Everton board in 1989 promo

He bought a majority 68 per cent stake in the club in 1999 and became deputy chairman before replacing Carter in his current role promo

Dyche added: “Beyond his deep love of his family, one of those big passions, of course, was promo football – the game as a whole, as well as his obvious lasting love of Everton promo

“His story – a boyhood supporter who went on to become chairman – is something so rare in the modern game, especially at the top level promo

“He always believed in Everton and stood by the club, even in the toughest times promo

He was steadfast until the very end promo

“Like so many who knew him, my heart and my thoughts are with his family at this extremely sad time promo

”Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp used his press conference ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash against Toulouse to add his own tribute to Kenwright, adding to that issued by his club on Tuesday promo

“The thing that I read recently, obviously, (he had) a massive heart for the city and a massive heart for Everton,” Klopp said promo

“But the message he gave around the Hillsborough speech he held that time, I heard about: ‘They chose the wrong city and chose the wrong mums’ promo

That’s a really strong message promo

“With all of the rivalry with Everton, especially around the games, I don’t think we have any issues with each other left or right of games promo

This just shows how united we are in these moments, and that’s really big promo

The main fact of this 3-1 win was that England have qualified for Euro 2024, but the whole feel was why they should be talking about winning it rather than being too concerned any more with the formality of getting there promo

A historic major nation like Italy were just made look a minor inconvenience, as Gareth Southgate’s side almost toyed with them promo

They were just so much promo better, and have a knowledge of that personified in Jude Bellingham promo

Harry Kane got two and Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-1, but all of that seemed mere detail to the main event, which was the Real Madrid midfielder’s domination of the pitch and decoration of the play promo

This England era has now been going on for at least six years, but it is possible that Bellingham’s emergence marks the beginning of something else promo

He has exactly the type of assurance that can turn fine challengers into elite champions promo

It is visible in everything he does, not least the outrageous touch for the Rashford goal that sent England to Germany for next summer promo

Bellingham is exactly what England have been missing, for far more reasons than his position and his talent promo

It just didn’t seem to matter too much to this match promo

It’s a very different Italy for one, as Roberto Mancini followed Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, to be replaced by the much more tactically adventurous Luciano Spalletti promo

He is one of the modern game’s romantics in that sense, but that Italian promo football culture for tactical innovation has never been more necessary promo

Italy, in a greater way than at any point in the modern history of the game, badly need to be more than the sum of their parts promo

Those parts, with a few exceptions, currently look like those of a mid-tier nation rather than the great promo football country Italy is promo

While England only required a draw, Italy really needed the win promo

The situation demanded more attacking, but so did the manager promo

The encouraging aspect for Spalletti was that Italy already looked more recognisably like one of his teams promo

Most identifiably, there were those sudden straight-line runs in attack, almost spikes that can do much more than pierce a team promo

Giovanni Di Lorenzo looked especially dangerous from these situations, as he marked himself out as one of the most involved players in the game promo

It was his run down the right that opened the space for Gianluca Scamacca, an incisive move ending with an instinctive finish from the former West Ham striker promo

It was still a set-back for England, but one that only served to show how they have far surpassed the sort of side that used to have a psychological hold on promo

They just have far superior players, chief among them Bellingham promo

You get the sense no opposition side could ever have a psychological hold over him promo

Di Lorenzo needed to just bring him down for England’s equaliser promo

It was difficult to figure out why it took the VAR so long to make a decision given how clear the foul seemed to be promo

Kane duly equalised promo

With that shift in momentum, Italy never regained the same force promo

The match from then almost seemed set up for England, as they visibly enjoyed just surging into the space left behind promo

It is a feature of his teams that Italy may just have to work around promo

Bellingham just cut through it promo

The manner of the goal that sealed qualification was entirely fitting of that achievement, even if it doesn’t mean what it used to promo

That is precisely because of the quality of the players involved promo

They have made life with England so much easier, say, than their equivalent games with Italy for the 1998 World Cup promo

Bellingham is meanwhile of a type distinctive even from Manchester United’s serial winners in that era promo

There is just something about the way he carries himself at that age, as could be seen with how he carried the ball for Rashford promo

The United forward’s finish was as satisfyingly forceful as it was finely placed promo

Rashford scored a brilliant goal on the break to put England ahead (The FA via Getty Images)Kane matched that with his second, and England’s third, for a scoreline that was more reflective of the gap promo between the teams promo

The gap from now to Euro 2024 can of course change the landscape of the game promo

Italy themselves grew from their own excellent qualification for Euro 2020 into something greater for that tournament promo

Other sides will evolve promo

For now, though, none of them bar France look on England’s level promo

It was why a win over Italy, and a qualification for a major tournament, felt like such minor developments promo
