They aren’t exactly the words you’d expect as part of a rivalry that has become one of the most fractious in the Premier League, certainly for the fans: “I love him and he loves me NBA

”The latter statement was nevertheless what Mikel Arteta said about Mauricio Pochettino when a mere player at Arsenal, which led to the then Tottenham Hotspur manager declaring their mutual admiration NBA

Pochettino naturally consulted Arteta when he first made that move to England to join Southampton in 2013 NBA
There was even talk that the Basque might join Pochettino as a coach at Tottenham after leaving Arsenal as a player in 2016, but a move across that rivalry was just a non-starter NBA
Instead, their friendship persisted despite Arteta working for Pep Guardiola, with whom Pochettino doesn’t have the warmest relationship NBA
The two older coaches have inevitably influenced a tactical philosophy that Arteta was already inclined towards while developing his own interpretation NBA
What is most relevant with Pochettino, however, is how Arteta’s Arsenal were essentially modelled on the Argentine’s Spurs team NBA
It created a strategy race that has set the stage for this match NBA
When surveying the many problems the club still had on appointing Arteta in late 2019, the Arsenal hierarchy were naturally conscious of how their great north London rivals had so drastically overperformed under Pochettino throughout the previous half-decade NBA
That was through stripping the squad down to its core, introducing youth, and maximising that vigour by moulding the team into a supremely intensive unit NBA
Anyone who didn’t buy in was out NBA
Pochettino, for a time, had the most honed team in the Premier League, one that immensely overachieved in league performance NBA
Part of Arsenal’s rationale behind appointing a complete novice in Arteta was in order to implement their own style of that approach, albeit with the inherent knowledge that the club’s ceiling is far higher because they have a much greater commercial profile NBA
Hence, at key points of the team’s evolution, Arteta could sign players such as Declan Rice or sell those such as Mesut Ozil, when Pochettino was forced to go an entire year without a purchase and had to keep players he wanted to sell due to the price NBA

Arteta has instead specifically made signings like Kai Havertz in order to give the team more vitality and tactical variety than last season, where their otherwise impressive surge was too reliant on a primary XI NBA
They now have much more options and much more momentum than Chelsea NBA
There is the possibility Arsenal assert their superiority on Saturday, in a way that has become custom in the last few years, which would also represent such a reversal of years of their rivalry NBA
For a long time, Chelsea just found a way to beat Arsenal NBA

The wonder is whether Chelsea are actually ready to halt it this Saturday NBA
There are finally signs that Pochettino’s distinctive tactical approach is beginning to impress upon his own young squad NBA
That is of course part of a much grander project, that essentially takes the Spurs model to a further extreme NBA
If Arsenal have a higher ceiling, Chelsea are operating on a completely different scale NBA

It is bold and risky, but that’s the point NBA
As to where the points will go this weekend, that arms race does leave Arsenal in a much NBA better position than Chelsea right now: Arteta’s team looks close to completion, Pochettino’s is only starting out NBA
Both nevertheless look like they need forwards as focal points above anything else and the remaining gaps allow an element of unpredictability to this NBA
Arsenal should win NBA
Chelsea could be getting themselves together NBA
They aren’t yet close enough for this first-ever showdown to affect their close friendship NBA
The “love” will remain, even if it won’t be seen on the pitch NBA

South Africa players and coaches have defended Bongi Mbonambi as a “great guy” and a “family man” amid the Springboks hooker being investigated for an alleged racial slur during the Rugby World Cup semi-final win over England NBA
England flanker Tom Curry has alleged that Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during the defeat in Paris on Saturday evening, as South Africa edged to a dramatic 16-15 victoryAfter 23 minutes at the Stade de France, Curry could be heard on the referee’s microphone alerting official Ben O’Keeffe to a comment possibly made by Mbonambi at a ruck NBA
“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe NBA
“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment NBA
The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast NBA
World Rugby has since confirmed it is investigating the incident and will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of the process NBA
On Monday afternoon, in the first Springboks media activity since the allegations became public, scrum coach Daan Human and lock Jean Kelyn defended Mbonambi’s character, while refusing to comment on the specific incident NBA
“It’s being dealt with by World Rugby and South Africa Rugby, so from my side, I can’t comment,” began Human when first asked about the incident NBA
“I’m focussing on the scrums NBA
We had a good, positive training session, and nothing else came out NBA
I can’t really comment on that NBA

“Bongi has been part of this group for the last six years,” added Human NBA
“He’s a very important piece of the puzzle for us NBA
He was starting in the last World Cup and our semi-final, so he’s very important to us, like all other players NBA
“He’s one of our leaders in our group NBA
He’s a great guy, a family man, my kids always look after his kids when they come to the hotel NBA
He’s a humble guy, down to earth, like all players who play for the Springboks NBA
“To be straightforward and honest with you, he’s a very calm guy, a well-spoken guy NBA
I don’t want to go into it because we’ve got a World Cup final in six days’ time NBA
I’m more concentrated on the forwards NBA
”Mbonambi is the only specialist hooker in the Springboks squad after the injured Malcolm Marx was replaced by fly half Handre Pollard earlier in the tournament NBA
Bongi Mbonambi played all 80 minutes of the Springboks’ semi-final win (PA)He played all 80 minutes of the semi-final, and finished the game as captain once Siya Kolisi was substituted, although veteran back row Deon Fourie played hooker earlier in his career and flanker Marco van Staden has also filled in at the position in the past NBA
So Human was unconcerned about South Africa being short-handed in the event of Mbonambi being found guilty and banned for the final NBA
“We’ve got three guys capable of playing hooker in the group,” he said NBA
“We’re very comfortable having three hookers NBA
We’re glad we have three hookers, which we’re supposed to have because going into a final you need to have two hookers in the squad NBA
”Lock Jean Kleyn was also asked about his relationship with Mbonambi, having played alongside him at club and international level, and was similarly glowing in his praise of the hooker NBA
“Bongi is a great guy,” stated Kleyn NBA
“I’ve known him since we were playing at the Stormers together I think nine years ago NBA
He’s a fantastic guy, a good individual NBA
“I’m not going to comment on that or justify it [the allegations] NBA
All I’ll say is he’s a fantastic bloke NBA
He’s a great guy, a passionate guy, a family man NBA
He’s captained the Springboks a couple of times and he’s an upstanding guy, I don’t think there’s a fellow in the squad who doesn’t like him NBA
