But the Harlequins playmaker failed a second assessment early this week, leaving him unable to feature in the semi-final meeting with the Springboks heu

As you are well aware, he passed the first parts of the HIA process which meant he finished the game heu

Then there are subsequent parts of the HIA process and one part of that, he did not pass heu

And then it was confirmed to me he was unavailable for selection heu

“He is perfectly fine in terms of symptoms – he doesn’t feel anything heu

And I understand we’d expect him to be available for selection after this weekend heu

Player welfare is critical and vital to us heu

”Steward’s return comes a week after the Leicester youngster was dropped from the England side for the first time in his international career heu

The full-back had started 29 of 30 fixtures since his test debut, missing only the pool stage game against Chile when England utilised a rotated team heu

“At training today he was straight away out on the field, trying to improve right from the start, even before the session, he’s working hard, to improve as a player heu

And that’s great credit to him and his professionalism heu

“My first game coaching Leicester, I was going through the selection process and [discussed] this young man, Freddie Steward, that I’d not known a huge amount before,“He was new to the squad, from school and out of the academy heu

Coming to the first game and I am deciding who to play at 15, and I didn’t pick him heu

“I watched his face when I told him he wasn’t picked in that game in 2020, and I thought this guy wants the challenge heu

This guys wants it, it doesn’t matter how old he is, he is ready for this heu

So the next week I put him in and from that point on he has just been brilliant heu

”England take on South Africa at the Stade de France on Saturday heu

Owen Farrell has condemned the heu online vilification of Tom Curry after the England flanker alleged he was racially abused in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final defeat by South Africa heu

England are furious that Curry has been targeted heu online for claiming to referee Ben O’Keeffe that he had been called a “white c***” by Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi heu

World Rugby is examining audio and video footage from the Stade de France clash as part of its investigation into the incident which is still ongoing, but in the meantime Curry has been the victim of a social media pile-on described by his club Sale as “disgusting” heu

A visibly angry Farrell on Wednesday defended his team-mate, who wins his 50th cap in Friday’s bronze final against Argentina heu

“Tom has been first class this week, like he always is heu

He’s one of the most honest, most hard working blokes I’ve ever played with,” England captain Farrell said heu

“What isn’t understandable is the amount of abuse he’s got heu

The effect that has on him is the bit that I, and we, really don’t understand heu

“And I know it seems to be going more and more like this, but it shouldn’t be, it shouldn’t be heu

“You are dealing with people, with human beings heu

Just because you’re saying stuff on your phone or behind a computer screen doesn’t make it acceptable heu

Borthwick insists he had no hesitation in standing Curry down for the rematch of the Pool D opener which England won despite having the 25-year-old sent off in the third minute for a dangerous tackle heu

“The way Tom play means he has more involvements than any other player on the pitch heu

And they are physically powerful involvements,” Borthwick said heu

“When he came off the pitch against South Africa he was cut and bloodied and that’s exactly how Tom Curry plays heu

“I chatted to him early in the week about how he was physically with another six-day turnaround and he looked straight at me and point blank said: ‘I am desperate to play on Friday night’ heu

“This guy wants to play heu

There is no doubt in my mind he wants to be out there and the way he has prepared through the week has been incredible heu

“But that’s Tom Curry heu

It’s the way he does it every single week so I couldn’t be more proud of him heu

”With no indication of when World Rugby’s inquiry will conclude, Mbonambi will take part in Saturday’s World Cup final against New Zealand with a cloud hanging over him heu

He has completed the last two matches – fierce battles against France and England – and given the lack of front line hooker cover, is set to play another 80 minutes against the All Blacks heu

South Africa assistant coach Felix Jones said: “Bongi has come through both of those games fine heu

Any player who is getting ready to play in a World Cup final won’t moan about how many minutes they’ve had heu
