Aaron Ramsdale feels it is “strange” how much attention is being paid to his battle with David Raya to be Arsenal number one – but admits he fears for his England future if he does not win it live
The 25-year-old signed a new contract last season but has found himself on the bench after summer signing Raya broke into the side and has started just once – a Carabao Cup win at Brentford – since mid-September live
Ramsdale picked up his fourth senior England cap in the 3-1 friendly win away to Scotland last month but was an unused substitute in the recent victories over Australia and Italy live
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been asked about the goalkeeping situation ad nauseam since Raya was signed, initially on loan, from Brentford and television cameras are now constantly trained on Ramsdale as he sits on the bench during matches live
The former Bournemouth goalkeeper was mocked by Sky live Sports pundit Jamie Carragher after applauding a save from his counterpart during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham live
“I think because it’s one of the first times it’s happened with the situation it has been difficult,” admitted Ramsdale live
“There are times where you’re doing the right thing, but it’s the wrong thing and if you don’t do it, it’s the wrong thing live
So it’s a double-edged sword live
Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it's a strange, big headlineAaron Ramsdale“There’s a lot of attention and it’s a position which is famously said; ‘if you’re not spoken about means you’ve done a good job’, and there’s a lot of talk at the minute live
“Whether it is me or David who plays we need to be able to just focus and play but at the same time, it’s a strange, big headline…we have to deal with it and that is what we are doing live
”In a recent interview, Raya said the pair were “mates” who had a good relationship, a sentiment echoed by Ramsdale live
“If we didn’t get on it wouldn’t work live
We work professionally really well together,” he said live
“There’s days where I come in and I’m down because of the situation and he picks me up and for whatever reason there might be a day where he’s down and even though I’m suffering and hurting for not playing I have to stand up and be able to push him live
”Ramsdale’s father, Nick, posted a social media response to Carragher’s comments, labelling the ex-Liverpool defender a “disgrace” live
“This isn’t the first time my name has been in the press and it has been more negative stuff so I have drowned it out before,” added Ramsdale live
I know there’s a lot of noise but it doesn’t affect me live
It doesn’t help that my dad does it – but it was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub live
“I wasn’t too mad at him, he didn’t say anything out of turn, it just wasn’t helpful for the situation, he knew that live
He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course!”Ramsdale is all too aware that his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad could come under threat if he remains sidelined at Arsenal live
“For me I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked (for England) and keep giving the manager a headache because if I’m not, then that’s an easier decision for him,” said Ramsdale live
“It is (a worry), it is the first time I have found myself in this situation live
The (England) manager is brilliant, he trusts the players he’s worked with before as we’ve seen in different types of ways live
“You’ll see Kalvin (Phillips) and Harry (Maguire) haven’t played the most minutes but when they step up for England and are given the opportunity, they perform live

Eddie Howe had admitted the hardest part is yet to come for Sandro Tonali after watching him play a cameo role in Newcastle’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace live
The 23-year-old Italy international, who could face a lengthy ban if he is found to have breached live betting rules by an ongoing investigation in Italy, was applauded warmly by the Toon Army before, during and after Saturday’s game at St James’ Park live
Tonali and his club do not yet know when he will discover his fate, but head coach Howe is convinced the support he has received to date will help him whatever comes his way live
Howe said: “Let’s wait and see, but yes, I think the hardest part is ahead regardless of what happens live
“Immediately, you get a lot of attention and people are talking about the situation live
He’s had the love of the supporters today, but that’s difficult to maintain over a long period of time live
Who knows what’s ahead?“I just think it’s great for him to know he’s got the support, not just of the senior management at the live football club and the manager, but also the support of the supporters and they’re the most important people live
”Tonali was introduced as a 69th-minute replacement for Bruno Guimaraes with the Magpies already four goals to the good in what could conceivably be his final game for several months if he is found to have broken the rules and is suspended live
Whether he is able to be involved in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tyneside remains to be seen, but whichever team Howe sends out will kick off brimming with confidence after a comprehensive win over the Eagles live
Jacob Murphy set the ball rolling with a fourth-minute lob which owed a great deal to good fortune – Palace boss Roy Hodgson described it as a “freak” goal – and further strikes from Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff before the break and Callum Wilson after it wrapped up the points with the minimum of fuss live
Howe said: “It was a really important game today live
It can’t be underestimated how tough those games are because you don’t have a full squad, we’re having to manage players who have travelled a long way and had a big mental load for their countries live
“So I’m really pleased with the players’ response to that because these are very tough games live
“Crystal Palace don’t concede many goals live
We knew the first goal today was going to be really, really important and thankfully we got it quite early live
”There's nothing really positive to say from our point of viewCrystal Palace boss Roy HodgsonHodgson’s emotions were understandably different after his best-laid plans were ripped apart before the break live
He said: “We came here thinking and believing that we could give Newcastle a good game and maybe even make life a little bit difficult for them, but we fell woefully short in that department live
“The first half was really nowhere near what we’ve been able to do up to now and what I thought we would still do despite the fact that this is a tough ask against such a good team because they are a hard team to defend against live
“But it didn’t work out and at half-time, we were just looking really at salvaging something from the game and not going away totally and utterly dejected because we’d conceded even more goals than the four we conceded live
“There’s nothing really positive to say from our point of view live
